Project Brief
Domo has a unique ability to manage businesses by helping users view a vast amount of data through complex data visualizations.
Data Center is at the core of Domo’s product. Our Database Admins (DBAs) play a crucial role in management and oversight of Databases. Offering our customers and their Database Admins a way to view and fix potential issues through our mobile app is an invaluable tool. It would offer a solution to better manage their role with more tools, especially while away from their computer.
Project Overview
At Domo there are many teams that work on various parts of the product. I work on the mobile team and was the designer in a Product Trio made up of an engineer and project manager. The three of us worked closely together to build this feature.
Understand the problem.
What problem am I trying to solve?
Monitoring the health and wellness of data should be convenient. How often do errors remain errors when access to a computer becomes difficult?
If users are only able to perform important and urgent tasks through solely computer access, we are not providing them with the tools they need to be successful. A mobile app which lacks the overview necessary to perform tasks from within the mobile app does not fulfill the role of a useful tool.
Tear down the current UI
To understand the problem is to understand what is already here.
Current dataset tab and filtering options.
Key Takeaways
No landing experience.
Data Center could use some better overview.
A home experience would allow for faster filtering.
Top level filtering should be surfaced.
Current dataflows tab and filtering options.
Problem Statement
How can I highlight important aspects of Data Center and provide the overview necessary to perform tasks from within the mobile app?
Analyze
Make sense of the problem.
Why is the problem important?
Our customer’s businesses are constantly seeing changes to their data, datasets change frequently and dataflows may need to be run often. Runs can pause or fail and errors can always occur. This means having oversight and being able to locate an issue while having the option to respond to errors from a mobile device allows business to swiftly carry on as usual.
Document thoughts and findings.
Feature Dossier
A comprehensive collection of detailed information about what problem is being solved, what feature is being built and what solution is being used.
Who am I solving this for?
Data Base Admins
A DBA has an in depth relationship to their data. They need detailed overview of their data and ways to investigate errors and alerts to keep the data they are responsible for accurate and current.
Top level needs:
Overview of datasets/dataflows with errors.
Overview of datasets/dataflows in progress.
Overview of run schedules.
Overview of accounts and connectors.
Research & Surveys
Getting to know the target group.
After going through Domo’s web app and speaking with the Data UX team to identify patterns in the Data Center UI, I realized there were still a lot of assumptions being made about what made a DBA successful. I was able to narrow down what to surface on the mobile app by conducting a survey.
The survey targeted “Major Domos otherwise known as Data Base Admins,” to better understand the breath of use cases. The survey consisted of 5 questions.
Question 1
If you had no access to your computer, what are the top 3 pieces of data you would like to see surfaced in a landing experience for Data Center on mobile?
Question 2
What top 3 actions in Data Center would be most helpful to take if you didn’t have your computer?
Question 3
Describe the actions you take when either a dataset/dataflow needs to be fixed?
Question 4
What makes a DBA successful?
Question 5
In the future what kind of Data Center features would you like to see available on mobile?
DBA Survey Questions
Results
Solution
Create an actionable landing experience.
What is on the home page?
Data Center Warehouse (This is a data visualization showcasing live DataSets or DataFlows in progress)
Favorite Filters (These are predetermined filters users defined on web, but currently do not have access to them on mobile)
Quick Filters (These are default filters which can be filtered again)
Recently Viewed
Needs Attention (DataSets or DataFlows which need attention)
What’s up next?
Connector Accounts
Data Permissions
Scheduling
My findings:
At the end of the survey, I tallied up the results and found that some of the assumptions made were pretty accurate. We were able to implement most of the feedback from the DBA’s needs and explored their nice to haves for future versions.
Top level needs included:
running datasets and dataflows
alerts and signifiers for errors, broken states
providing an avenue for investigation
Runner ups included metadata, accounts, elapsed run time and number of errors
From there, I wrote the Feature Dossier that helped further answer important questions and decided it was best to create a home experience which gave users quicker access and overview of the areas frequented on web.
